Tonio Descanvelle is a French actor who discovered his passion for acting as a teenager, when a travelling commedia dell’arte troupe invited a group of schoolchildren on stage—an experience that set him firmly on his artistic path.
In Paris to train at leading drama schools, including the Conservatoire National Supérieur d’Art Dramatique. He quickly established himself on stage, performing alongside renowned actors such as Michel Bouquet, Georges Wilson, Daniel Prévost, and Rufus. Drawn to cinema, Descanvelle went on to build a solid screen career, taking on distinctive supporting roles for acclaimed directors including Claude Zidi, Xavier Beauvois, Bertrand Tavernier, Olivier Dahan, Louis Leterrier, Mathieu Kassovitz, and Abdellatif Kechiche. He is particularly known for his long-standing collaboration with Luc Besson, appearing in films such as The Messenger: The Story of Joan of Arc, Arthur and the Invisibles, The Extraordinary Adventures of Adèle Blanc-Sec, The Family (Malavita), Lucy, and Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets. Across these projects, he has developed a strong and versatile screen presence through a wide range of supporting characters.
In 1995–1996, he joined the Canal+ writing workshop led by Pierre Lescure and Didier Boujard, where he received a European Script Fund award for Paris Goutte d’Or.

Attiré par le cinéma, il construit une carrière solide à l’écran, en incarnant des rôles secondaires marquants sous la direction de réalisateurs tels que Claude Zidi, Xavier Beauvois, Bertrand Tavernier, Olivier Dahan, Louis Leterrier, Mathieu Kassovitz et Abdellatif Kechiche. Il est particulièrement reconnu pour sa collaboration durable avec Luc Besson, avec qui il tourne dans Jeanne d’Arc, Arthur et les Minimoys, Les Aventures extraordinaires d’Adèle Blanc-Sec, Malavita, Lucy ou encore Valerian et la Cité des mille planètes. À travers ces films, il affirme une présence à l’écran à la fois forte et polyvalente, en interprétant une grande diversité de personnages. En 1995-1996, il intègre l’atelier d’écriture de Canal+ dirigé par Pierre Lescure et Didier Boujard, et reçoit une aide d'European Script Fund pour Paris Goutte d’Or.
